Niagara Falls Nature Lovers Guide

alt

Niagara Falls State Park was designed to let visitors interact with nature. In addition to magnificent views of the falls, the park offers spectacular sights along the Niagara Gorge Trail System. Meandering through the Niagara River Gorge, the trail system extends from Niagara Falls, New York, north to Lewiston, New York. The popular rim path within the park extends from Horseshoe Falls and connects to the Upper Great Gorge Trail that leads to the Whirlpool Rapids. Parts of the trail are near the water’s edge and allow close-up views of the gorge’s sedimentary rock walls.

The Trail System offers about 14.5 miles of trails

alt

Parts of the trail system can be reached by car, including Whirlpool State Park and Devil’s Hole. If you choose to hike the Niagara Gorge Trail System, be prepared, as the trails descending into the gorge are not intended for a casual stroll. They include steep stairs and large rocks that must be climbed over. Sturdy footwear is a suggested.

Running parallel to the Gorge Rim Trail is the Robert Moses Parkway Trail, a year-round multiuse recreational trail, which is a popular place for cycling, rollerblading, running and walking.  This three-mile trail is easily accessed from the Discovery Center, Whirlpool and Devil’s Hole State Parks.

Niagara Falls State Park offers guided tours on the trail system that begin at Niagara Gorge Discovery Center’s trailhead. For more information or to make a reservation, call (716) 278-0820 in season.

Testimonials

“You have to see it to believe it! Pictures do not do this spectacular vision of nature justice at all. While visiting family in Syracuse, we made the short trip to the falls, both American and Canadian sides and will cherish the memories forever! Thanks for keeping her so alive and vibrant for each generation to behold.”
– Debra E., Florida
