Winter Birding at Cave of the Winds
Where: Niagara Falls State Park
When: Saturday and Sunday, February 14-15, 2026The Cave of the Winds is welcoming winter birders!
Winter birding at Niagara Falls is excellent for gulls, diving ducks, and other waterfowl, with species like Bonaparte’s Gulls, Common Goldeneyes, and many more frequenting the icy waters. The Cave of the Winds, open year-round and offering access to views of incredible icy formations from the mist of the cataract with an elevator down to the gorge level, you’ll be close to all the bird action of the Falls and the river’s edge. You’ll find amazing numbers of gulls, plus wintering ducks like mergansers and canvasbacks, using the unfrozen sections of the Niagara River as a refuge from Arctic conditions, making it a world-class birding destination.
As part of the Birds on the Niagara International Birding Festival — Educators will be stationed at the base of the elevator with spotting scopes on Saturday and Sunday (2/14/26 & 2/15/26) from 10am – 1pm! Come see what makes Niagara a critical link in the survival of many birds, take a look through the spotting scope, chat with our educators to get some help with bird identification, and maybe add a bird or two to your checklist! Included with a ticket for the Cave of the Winds.
